Most dogs probably know enough or remember enough to know that you didn't literally birth them, but some might actually think that who knows. And their people become akin to a parental figure to them, like their "alpha" in a pack which is usually their parents. Dogs are always going to be pups in many ways. For instance, adult wolves don't play, but as we know, even the most senior dogs will play it up. They never become adults in the ways wolves will. In short, wolves live in nuclear family units like us.ĭomestic dogs are in a state of suspended adolescence. It's usually a Mom and Dad, and their offspring, and maybe another familial relative or random dog. But they failed to consider that most packs aren't a bunch of random wolves thrown together. They formed a pack, with a clear alpha male and female, so researchers decided their is a dominance hierarchy that dogs will form. Dominance theory, about how there is an alpha and whatnot, was adopted for dogs after they got a bunch of random wolves, and put them together to see how they interacted. So, wolves and dogs have a social structure similar to ours. And basically, yes, you are their Mother, though they probably don't actually think they birthed them, but then again they probably don't think of things like that. I've done a lot of reading about dogs, their social structure, and how it relates to their people. But for now this is all what I know being a mother feels like and it is pretty awesome! They fill my heart everyday. People might say you don’t know how it really feels to be a mother to your own baby. I don’t have a human child of my own yet but Zazu and Walle make me feel like a Mother. To me I feel like, maybe they understand that I am protecting them just like their real mother would have done. When Zazu and Walle get sick, hurt or are scared, other than saying “it's going to be ok, mamma loves you.” I always rub my face against them. Or am I just MOMMY to them, that person who is less stricter than Daddy, who succumbs to their puppy eyes everytime and ends up forgiving and forgetting all the not so good things they do, or the one who hides small bites of food behind Daddy to give to them. The kind you know who actually gave birth to them, who they sucked milk from, who licked them and rubbed faces against them and kept them warm and clean. Sometimes I wonder if Zazu and Walle really think I am their MOTHER. I have two dogs Zazu a 5 year old Labrador and Walle a 1 year old German Shorthaired Pointer.
